News: Greek refugee camps must be evacuated

The aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) called on Friday for the migrant to immediately move from overcrowded camps on the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea to the European mainland.

After visiting the islands of Chios and Lesbos, MSF head Christos Christou told reporters in Athens that the camps resemble the worst humanitarian facilities in the world and should be closed.

Initially, these centers were built to accommodate a total of 6,200 people, but their number has increased almost sixfold.

"35,000 people live in complete chaos and without any dignity on the Greek islands," he said, adding that 300 people shared only one toilet on Chios.

Poverty and squalor

Christow said many residents who have been tortured and mistreated or who are struggling with mental illness are being subjected to degrading camp conditions without receiving proper care.

"They don't get any help and instead of improving their condition worsens", - he said.

Greece is a key transit point for migrants hoping to enter the European Union from neighboring Turkey.

The camps on the five islands of Lesbos, Chios, Kos, Samos and Lerisos were set up to process asylum requests in accordance with the 2016 agreement between the EU and Turkey on limiting the influx of migrants.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, almost 50,000 migrants have arrived on the Greek islands this year.

Greece tightens migration policy

In an attempt to limit the numbers even further, Greece's conservative government this week announced plans to strengthen border controls and speed up the deportation of migrants not eligible for asylum.

Athens wants to close the overcrowded island camps and replace them with smaller, stricter detention centers. Asylum seekers will be held in camps until they are granted refugee status or are sent back to Turkey if they are refused.

In the next few weeks, Greece plans to relocate up to 20,000 people to the mainland.

MSF head Christou criticized these measures, saying that NGOs will not have access to the new centers, while people detained there will not be able to leave.

They "can become prisons at the end of the day, and won't treat people like people. They will treat them as problems," he said Looking for some porn? Here is listofporn which list the world's best xxx sites!
